How Inheritance Tax is Calculated in Spain

Step 1: Determine the Taxable Base

The taxable base is the net value of the assets inherited, minus debts and funeral expenses. For property, the reference value (valor de referencia catastral) set by the Catastro is used as the minimum taxable value.

Step 2: Apply Personal Reductions

Reductions depend on your relationship to the deceased:

Step 3: Apply the National Tax Rate

The national tax rates range from 7.65% (on the first €7,993) to 34% (on amounts over €797,555). A multiplier of 1.0 to 2.4 applies based on relationship group and pre-existing wealth.

Step 4: Apply the Valencian Community Reduction

Since 2023, the Valencian Community applies a 99% reduction on the final tax amount for Groups I and II. This means close relatives effectively pay only 1% of the calculated tax.

Example Calculation

Property value: €300,000. Inheritor: child (Group II). After the €100,000 reduction, taxable base = €200,000. National tax ≈ €31,000. After 99% Valencian reduction = €310.
